U.S. Army Edit Spot

Standard

For my IMC 634 class, we had to create a paper edit of an Army spot. The ad had to be 2-3 minutes long and contain quotes from an interview of Captain Y and Captain Z of the Army. The assignment required that we edit the interview to showcase a spot that includes the following content points:

1. Soldiers often pride themselves on their ability to take care of

problems on their own. But it doesn’t always work.

2. That’s when the leader needs to step in. Being a leader means

caring for other soldiers, being aware of the stresses they’re ArmyLOGO

under, and doing something about it.

3. Families are a soldier’s best support. But when there’s a problem

in the family, the soldier’s work is going to suffer, and the unit

may suffer as a result.

4. An Army unit is a very special thing. It’s like a family.

From there, we had to add visuals into the spot. Here’s what I came up with:

VISUAL

AUDIO

1. Close up shot of a man dressed in an Army uniform looking straight into the camera CPT Z: There’s a stereotype that if you’re in the Army, that you’ve got to be a man.
2. CPT Y: Oh, definitely. Definitely.
3. Medium shot of the man Army crawling through the mud. He has a determined look on his face. CPT Z: And you don’t ask for help. And I think, as Commanders, you’ve got to keep breaking through that barrier of, “I’m a man. I’m in the Army. I don’t need help”
4. Medium shot of the man in his bunk sitting on his bed looking at a picture of him and his family. He is by himself. CPT Y: Right. Most cases, most soldiers like to keep their own problems personal.
5. Medium shot of the man talking to his commander CPT Z: I think it’s Important that we recognize those soldiers that need help and try to break that barrier and let them know it’s okay to come forward and ask for the help that the Army can provide them.
6. Medium shot of other members of the Army consoling the man. They are patting his back, shaking hands with him, and hugging him. CPT Y: If one soldier is hurting, his friends are going to know about it. His friends are going to suffer from it. It’s going to bring down morale. So as much as possible, you want to open up all avenues to help every soldier possible.
7. Medium shot of other members of the Army consoling the man. They are patting his back, shaking hands with him, and hugging him. CPT Z: And we will drop training at the drop of a hat to help soldiers out and their families
8. Medium shot of a man in the Army sitting in a camp with the man. The man is talking to the other Army member, and the Army member is nodding his head – nonverbally saying “yes.” CPT Y: You have to really have an honest ear and an open heart to accept whatever they come with. Soldiers themselves, have some ego that they want to keep held private, and they want to have confidence that you hold it in confidentiality.
9. Medium shot of the two men. The Army man shakes hands with the man. CPT Z: Once they ask for help or you get them to admit that they need help, it gets easier from there.
10. A close up of the man offers a hand to a female in the Army. She looks up at him and gives a close-mouthed, half smile. CPT Y: It’s also a domino effect. Once one soldier receives help, he’s willing to help another soldier. It’s a conglomerate team.As we’re willing to help you, a soldier is going to always know who’s going to need help. So if they’re willing to reach out that hand to help each other, it becomes contagious.
11. A medium shot of a group of men and women in the Army working together to fix heavy machinery in a kitchen. They are laughing and helping eachother out. CPT Z: I’ve never seen a unit come together more than when a soldier or a soldier’s family needs help. And we will drop training at the drop of a hat to help soldiers out and their families.
12. A medium shot of the man at his home. He is in a living room with an elderly woman (his mother), a middle-aged woman (his wife), and a young boy (his son). The Army man is hugging his mother. CPTY: A soldier is no good without his family. And even when it come down to single soldiers, if it’s a grandparent or whatever their support system is, you do all that you can to support it.
13. A close up shot of the man on the computer at his home. He is Skyping with two members of the Army who are back on the base. CPT Z: And that saying, “leave no man behind,” it doesn’t just refer to when you’re on the battlefield. It refers just as much to whenyou’re back here at home station and your soldier needs help.

14. A medium shot of the two Army members on base who are Skyping. The computer screen is in the background with the man’s face. They are smiling and talking – reassuring him that all of his work will be done. The man in the background picks up his son and has his son wave to the two Army members on the other end of the video chat. CPT Y: And they have a confidence to understand that the unit will do all that’s possible to give that soldier all the support necessary. And not only just support, but he’s going to have the time. If a task is coming up or a duty coming up, it’s going to come regardless. We’ll find somebody else that can do it. And it’s not that you’re not healthy enough to do it or that you’re not capable of doing it; it’s the priority that your family and the needs of your family outweigh this simple task.
15. A medium shot of a Commander overlooking 5 Army members. The Army members are on a landing strip of an airport. They are saying goodbye to their family members – hugging and kissing them. CPT Z: Once in command, I had 92 soldiers that I took command of. But I also know that I had, with those 92 soldiers, about50 or 55 families that came with it. And a good amount of my time is spent dealing

with family members.

16. A close up shot of the Commander talking one on one with an Army member. He is pointing to a piece of paper and sharing information with him. He is giving him directions on how to complete a task. CPT Y: As Captains in the U.S. Army, it’s a rank. But it’s also — you have to know what your charge is, and as you take that charge, you don’t just feed, you don’t just listen; you nurture. And what you’re going to nurture is that philosophy of the Army values. You’re going to nurture the philosophy of helping each other. You’re going to nurture the philosophy of teamwork. With the balance of a strong unit and a supportive unit, a

soldier never has to worry.

17. A medium shot of a group of Army members lined up saluting. CPT Z: There’s no other employer in the world that will support its employees like the Army does.
18. Close up shot of the Army’s logo CPT Y: And it’s amazing

Leave any comments letting me know what you think of the spot. I’d love to hear them!

AN ANALYSIS OF PROTAGONISTS

A protagonist is defined as the “leading character, hero, or heroine in a drama or other literary work” (Dictionary.com, n.d.). In most literary works, there is a protagonist, or central character, that undergoes some sort of change. In order to make that change, he/she experiences a journey in which he/she grows. Without a protagonist, many stories would not have the depth and plot that they do. Outlined below are some of film’s greatest protagonists. The analysis below will discuss the character, his/her journey, what is at stake, and how this character played a central role in the film.

It’s a Wonderful Life

1. What is at stake?

In It’s a Wonderful Life, George Bailey’s (the protagonist of the story) life and self-worth are at stake. George is contemplating suicide after life doesn’t seem to go his way. The central character has always had dreams of traveling the world and attending college; however, George has to continuously postpone these visions. On top of that, George is forced to run his family’s business and is could be thrown in jail after finding out his Uncle Billy handed over a large amount of money to the town villain. All of the downturns spiral into George’s depression, which ultimately leads him contemplating suicide.

2. Who is the central character? Why? Describe this character’s personal journey.

The central character of this movie is George Bailey. He can be defined as the central character because he is the protagonist – the entire plot is based around George and his journey.  The story starts off by describing George as a very selfless person that would do anything to help others. He saved his brother from drowning and his boss from going to jail. However, during the present time in the story, George is facing many hardships. He had always hoped of attending college and moving out of his hometown, Bedford Falls. Instead, he is stuck living in his hometown running his family’s Building and Loan Company. Worse off, he is facing jail time after realizing his Uncle Bill gave $8,000 of the company’s money to a foe – Mr. Potter. During a time when George needed it most, he gets a visit from his guardian angel – Clarence. Clarence shows George what Bedford Falls would be like without him. After receiving guidance from Clarence, George realizes his self-worth and recognizes that he wants to “live again” because he is exactly where he should be.

3. How is the character transformed?

English: Screenshot of Jimmy Stewart and Donna...

By the end of the story, George recognizes his role in Bedford Falls. He no longer looks down on his life, but he realizes that his life is a vital piece to those around him. George has transformed into a person of self-worth instead of self-loathing, and he is granted the affirmation about his life that he has been longing throughout his entire journey.

4. What good reason does the character have not to act?

George’s views his life as a complete disappointment. He has not achieved his goals of getting an education, moving out of Bedford Falls, and traveling around the world. Instead, he is doing the exact opposite of what he wants to do – live at home running his family’s business. George is always doing things for others instead of himself, which led him to a life of regret and dissatisfaction. To make matters worse, he is facing the possibility of being locked away in jail. With no real drive or reason to live, it is easy for George to give up and end his life. He is unhappy with his life, his career, and could possibly be going to jail; therefore, he has good reason to not act and give up on his life.

Titanic

1. What is at stake?

There are several things at stake in Titanic. Rose’s (one of the main characters in the story) happiness, reputation, and life are at stake in the film. Rose finds herself falling in love with a man who is not her fiancée and belongs in a lower social class during a time of tragedy. During many dramatic twists and turns in the plot, Rose must make some very important decisions that put her happiness, relationship, reputation, and life at stake.

2. Who is the central character? Why? Describe this character’s personal journey.

Rose DeWitt Bukater, played by Kate Winslett, is the central character in Titanic. While there may be some dispute that her counterpart – Jack – is the main character, Rose can be viewed as the central character because she undergoes the biggest change in the story. The story is set in 1912 and takes place on the infamous ship – the Titanic.  Rose boards the ship as an upper-class, unhappy bride-to-be. She is engaged to a rich suitor, Cal, by her mother’s doing.  Stuck in an unhappy relationship, Rose is living the life that her mother sees fit for her instead of the life that she wants. While aboard the Titanic, Rose contemplates suicide because of her unhappiness. During her attempt at suicide, a poor artist named Jack saves her life. After that initial meeting, Rose and Jack had clandestine meetings, which led to their falling in love. Jack was able to bring happiness and true love to Rose – something that she did not experience with Cal. In the midst of their affair, the Titanic struck an iceberg – forcing Rose to make a decision – should she live an unhappy, luxurious life with Cal or a fulfilling, happy, poor life with Jack?  Rose decided to turn against her mother’s wishes, and she pursued a life with the underprivileged artist. After making this decision, Rose is faced with the chance of death when she must save Jack from the ship’s solitary confinement. Additionally, after the Titanic goes down, Rose is left fighting for her life in the middle of the ocean. Once saved, Rose makes the decision to lead a different life – one that is full of love, laughter, and happiness, which was inspired by her true love, Jack.

3. How is the character transformed?

Rose has undergone a huge transformation throughout the story. At the beginning of the story, she is extremely unhappy with her life. Her mother is forcing her to live a life that she does want, and her fiancé is a controlling, pompous aristocrat that she does not love. Rose gives up her upper-class life to pursue happiness and true love. She makes a bold decision to disobey her mother and face ridicule by others in the upper-class society. However, in the end, Rose realizes that it is only happiness and love that matter in life – not wealth. At the end of the story, an older, wiser Rose reflects back on her story from the Titanic and shares how it has completely changed her for the better.

4. What good reason does the character have not to act?

Rose has many reasons to give up. For one, she is living a life that she did not choose. Her mother has pushed a lifestyle on her that makes her unhappy and feels lessened. Additionally, Rose is trapped in a relationship that is not made up of love. For Rose, it is easier to give up on life (suicide) then it is to turn a new leaf. However, the meeting of Jack inspires her to go forward with a better, happier life. Finally, towards the end of the story, Rose watches her love, Jack, die in front of her. For a second time, Rose could easily give up on life. However, she takes what she has learned from Jack and her time on the Titanic to act and develop a new life.

Rebel Without a Cause

1. What is at stake?

In Rebel Without a Cause, Jim Stark is a rebellious teenager full of angst. He is headed down a bad path of drugs, alcohol, and poor decisions. Therefore, several things are at stake for him – his future, his relationships with his parents, friendships, romantic relationships, education, and health. Unless Jim changes his ways, he is going to be headed down a path of destruction.

2. Who is the central character? Why? Describe this character’s personal journey.

Rebel Without a Cause is a story based around the central character, Jim Stark. Jim Stark is a 17-year-old high school student 1263681209-6601_rebel_without_a_cause_jigsaw_puzzle_lgwho is disobedient and unruly. Jim lives in a dysfunctional family, where his parents often fight. His father tries to stick up for Jim’s rowdy behavior; however, Jim’s mother always wins the arguments with his father. The relationship between Jim’s parents causes Jim to lose respect for his father, asking him questions such as “What do you do when you have to be a man?” Throughout the story, Jim has a run-in with a local bully, Buzz, which ends tragically for Buzz. Additionally, one of Jim’s few friends, Plato, passes when he tries to defend Jim. After all of the tragic events, Jim finally gets the wake-up call that he needed. He realized that he had two choices: 1. He can continue down the destructive path or 2. He can decide to make some changes. Jim goes with the latter, and furthermore, his father makes some changes as well. The Stark family is brought together, and Jim’s journey brings him to a positive path.

3. How is the character transformed?

Jim has greatly changed throughout Rebel Without a Cause. He starts out at the beginning of the story as an immature, rebellious teen. By the end of the story, he has matured and uncovered what it means to respect and care for someone. He no longer wants to make bad decisions; he wants to do the right thing.

4. What good reason does the character have not to act?

rebel

Jim’s main reason not to act is due mostly to his parents. Jim wanted so desperately for his father to be a man that he could look up to and respect. However, Jim’s dad wasn’t the man that he needed. He didn’t provide the discipline or care/concern that wasrequired to keep Jim in line. Additionally, with his parents fighting at home, Jim didn’t have any guidance; therefore, there was no reason for him to change his rebellious ways.
